The Overachievers has grown into one of the top comedy shows in the country. Hosted by local favorite Martin Amini and music by DJ Bo, The Overachievers is a showcase of comedians seen on HBO, Comedy Central, and NBC.

The August lineup includes Denise Taylor, Rufat Agayev and Derek Gaines.

Martin Amini

Martin Amini

Martin Amini is a stand up comic based in Washington D.C. and born and raised in Silver Spring, MD. Martin recently made Thrillist's "Best Undiscovered Stand Up Comedian list" and has opened for headliners such as Trevor Noah, Jerrod Carmichael, and Hasan Minaj. Martin's stand-up material touches on what it's like growing up mixed in America coming from an Iranian and Bolivian background. You can watch Martin on the new stand up show "Laff Tracks" on TruTV and “Unprotected Sets" premiering on Epix October 2018 produced by Wanda Sykes.

Derek Gaines

Derek Gaines

Derek Gaines was born in California, but found his comedy chops while growing up in Philadelphia. He currently calls New York City his home where he regularly performs and brings a unique perspective to growing up African American in the suburbs. Derek’s first break came when he reached the semi-finals of Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes in 2010. Also in 2010 Derek was a finalist in Philadelphia’s Phunniest Person Competition. Derek made his standup comedy television debut in 2014 when he appeared on AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live and was selected by the Just For Laughs Festival as part of their New Faces showcase. Derek has been a contributor to VH1’s Morning Buzz and TRU TV’s Greatest Ever. He starred in Morgan Spurlock’s docuseries “Connected”. Derek is also a cast member of MTV’s Joking Off and the co-host of MTV’s Broke A$$ Game Show. Derek plays the role of Jaybird in the hit Tracy Morgan series THE LAST O.G. for TBS. He was one of the lead roles in the NBC comedy pilot RELATIVELY HAPPY opposite Jane Lynch after coming off a very successful dramatic appearance on ABC’s TRAINING DAY. Derek recently had a break out role on the season’s NBC hit Will & Grace.

Rufat Agayev

Rufat Agayev

Rufat Agayev immigrated to the U.S. from Azerbaijan when he was 5 years old. Growing up in Pennsylvania and graduating from Florida State University, he later moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. Four years later, he found stand up comedy and has since worked his way up in one of the toughest comedy scenes in the world. He is a regular on some of New York City's most popular shows like Comedians You Should Know, Comedy at The Knit, and Better Days, and clubs like Stand Up NY, The Stand, and New York Comedy Club.

Denise Taylor

Denise Taylor knew she wanted to be a comedian ever since her fourth grade teacher called her a "ringleader" for distracting the class with jokes. At 26, Denise's sharp material and commanding stage presence has led her to open for several national touring headliners, including Judah Friedlander, Chris Gethard, Kamau Bell, Moshe Kasher, and many more. Denise is currently a contributor for The Onion. She also appears frequently on two of DC's most popular comedy shows: Fale University and The Time Machine Roast.
