In 2017, the DC Improv celebrates its 25th anniversary by remembering the past – and looking to the future. The Next Wave series features rising stars, recommended to us (and you) by some of our favorite DC Improv headliners. These are performers that comedy fans will be talking about for years to come, and this is your chance to see them up close at one of the most respected comedy venues in America.

New York based comics Jacqueline Novak and Chris Laker are the very definition of “multi talented” – their comedy projects have included memoirs, podcasts, satellite radio programs, and more. Plus, they’re great and quirky stand-up comedians. They are recommended to you by a man who has been taking them on tour in 2017 … the great Mike Birbiglia!


Jacqueline Novak is a stand-up comedian and the author of the humor non-fiction memoir How to Weep in Public: Feeble Offerings on Depression from One Who Knows (Three Rivers Press, 2016). In 2015 Jacqueline made her Network TV debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden and was named one of Comedy Central’s Comics to Watch. In 2014, Jacqueline's self-released stand-up album Quality Notions debuted at #2 on iTunes. Jacqueline's been a featured act at a variety of comedy festivals including: Tig Notato's Bentzen Ball, Bridgetown Comedy Festival and Riot LA) In New York City, Jacqueline can be seen most weeks at Cake Shop Comedy (called “achingly hip" by The Village Voice), a raucous weekly comedy show she co-hosts with Liza Treyger and John Early.

Since making a splash as a NEW FACE at the prestigious Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2011, Chris Laker's edgy stand-up has earned him a following in New York's alternative comedy scene. For over five years he hosted the stand-up and panel talk show, The Show, every Wednesday at the Creek & The Cave, a favorite of comedians like Ted Alexandro, Nikki Glaser, Gary Gulman, and more. His podcast This Week in Jackin’ is frequently on the iTunes charts. Chris can be heard on the SiriusXM Stars "Wake Up with Taylor", and seen on "The Artie Lange Show" on DirecTV's Audience Network. Recently, Chris has written for the The Howard Stern Show and the Roast of Corey Taylor, heard SiriusXM Howard 101. His debut stand-up album, “Moments of Greatness”, was released by Comedy Dynamics and reached the top 10 on the iTunes comedy charts. It is available everywhere that sells/streams music and comedy.


Mike BirbigliaMike Birbiglia is a comedian, writer, actor, and director known for his highly personal approach to comedy. Birbiglia burst onto the scene in 2006 with his critically acclaimed debut, “Two Drink Mike” on Comedy Central Records, and followed that with “My Secret Public Journal Live,” “Sleepwalk With Me Live” and “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend.” He toured his most recent show, “Thank God for Jokes,” to more than 100 cities, and filmed it for Netflix, where it will premiere in 2017. Birbiglia can also be seen as Danny Pearson in "Orange is the New Black," as well as in Amy Schumer’s "Trainwreck," "The Fault in Our Stars," and in his own films, "Sleepwalk With Me" and "Don’t Think Twice."
