SPOTLIGHT

For a second year in a row, the DC Improv is teaming up with President Lincoln's Cottage for the "Two Faces" Comedy Series. Enjoy comedy shows in President Lincoln's favorite DC retreat, for just $5! Each show is meant to reflect some aspect of Lincoln's legacy, or the history of the cottage.

The September 2017 edition is a veterans comedy showcase. President Lincoln's Cottage is on the grounds of the Old Soldiers Home, and Lincoln would frequently visit with soldiers during his stays at the cottage. So we're bringing you four comedians who have served in the military: Tim Miller, Cerrome Russell, Kj Pettersen and Michael Garvey.

YOUR PERFORMERS

Tim Miller

Tim Miller

Tim Miller (Army). Tim Miller's aggressive but endearing comedy style creates a show worth seeing more than once. His life as a sheltered son of Pentecostal ministers from Waco, Texas, and working at the White House (during three administrations) has made for an energetic show that combines a dynamic stage presence with an energetic delivery.

Cerrome Russell

Cerrome Russell

Cerrome Russell (Marines). A born and bred southern man, Cerrome Russell brings his own brand of storytelling to the stage. He has more than a decade of experience making people laugh. Get ready for the monster from Georgia.

Kj Pettersen

Kj Pettersen

Kj Pettersen (Marines). Kj Pettersen, born and raised as a cheese-totting Wisconsinite, served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for over 6 years and the U.S. Peace Corps for 2.5 years. She began doing stand-up with a veteran arts organization in the DC area called the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) in 2015 and has since then performed at venues across and beyond DC. She currently runs and hosts a monthly, military-veteran focused comedy show in the DMV (@SmokinJokinDC), and continues working with ASAP, now as a lead instructor for their stand-up comedy bootcamp (www.asapasap.org).

Michael Garvey

Michael Garvey

Michael Garvey (Marines). Michael Garvey has a made the journey from Iraq and Afghanistan, where he earned the Purple Heart, to comedy stages across the country. Since getting his start in 2015, he has turned sources of frustration into comedy gold and he performs regularly with his service dog Liberty. Michael has performed at the Obama White House and recently opened for Bob Saget.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S COTTAGE

Lincoln's Cottage

President Lincoln’s Cottage is an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood of northwest Washington, D.C. President Lincoln’s Cottage first opened to the public in February 2008, after an eight-year capital restoration project under the auspices of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is the only place the public can experience the history of Abraham Lincoln’s public and private life where he lived and worked for over a quarter of his presidency. While in residence at the Cottage, Lincoln visited with wounded soldiers, spent time with self-emancipated men, women and children, and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The human cost of the Civil War surrounded him, undoubtedly impacted his thinking, and strengthened his resolve to challenge the status quo. Through innovative guided tours, exhibits and programs, we use Lincoln’s example to inspire visitors to take their own path to greatness, and preserve this place as an authentic, tangible connection to the past and a beacon of hope for all who take up Lincoln’s unfinished work.
