Make Up Party

Comedy at
Lincoln's Cottage

November 13 / $5

Comedy in one of DC's coolest historic homes! November features a Make Up Party contest, with all comedy inspired by Abraham Lincoln! Just $5 to either play or watch. All ticketing is through Lincoln's Cottage.

For a fourth year in a row, President Lincoln's Cottage is teaming up with the DC Improv for the "Two Faces" Comedy Series. Enjoy comedy shows in President Lincoln's favorite DC retreat, for just $5! Each show is meant to be inspired by some aspect, silly or serious, of Lincoln's legacy or the history of the cottage.

For November 2019 we're bringing the Improv's creative challenge, the Make Up Party, to Lincoln's Cottage. We're challenging the funny people of the DMV to come up with five minutes of comedy, inspired by the theme of ABRAHAM LINCOLN. You get to enjoy what they come up with -- and send the best performers home with cash prizes from the DC Improv! Whether you're hopping on stage or in the crowd, it's gonna be a good time.

If you want to compete: Teams can be one to four people. Fill out this form to let us know that you want to play. Once we confirm that you're on the show, buy tickets for your team and get to work! You can prepare stand-up, sketch, a pun routine or something beyond category. Improv troupes are also welcome to compete! Performances need to be a maximum of five minutes, and they need to be inspired by ABRAHAM LINCOLN in some way. Be creative! Beards, honesty, pennies, wrestling, theater, mattress sales, the Gettysburg Address, Mary Todd, debates ... it's all fair game.

The winning team (as decided by audience cheers) takes home a $250 cash prize from the Improv, and the runner up gets $125.

About the Cottage

President Lincoln's Cottage is an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. President Lincoln’s Cottage first opened to the public in February 2008. It is the only place the public can experience the history of Abraham Lincoln’s public and private life where he lived and worked for over a quarter of his presidency. While in residence at the Cottage, Lincoln visited with wounded soldiers, spent time with self-emancipated men, women and children, and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The human cost of the Civil War surrounded him, undoubtedly impacted his thinking, and strengthened his resolve to challenge the status quo. Through innovative guided tours, exhibits and programs, we use Lincoln’s example to inspire visitors to take their own path to greatness, and preserve this place as an authentic, tangible connection to the past and a beacon of hope for all who take up Lincoln’s unfinished work.

About This Competition

The Make Up Party debuted in 2015 in the DC Improv lounge. People were given a subject one hour before the start of the event, then scrambled to get their performances ready to go. It was very cool to watch -- but it's also VERY tough to get stand-up and sketch performances ready in one hour, starting from scratch.

The revamped edition debuted in fall 2017. Now, performers know the theme well in advance, and show up at the Improv ready to rock. Teams can be one to six people, and the performance that makes the audience laugh the hardest gets a cash prize.
