The Improv teams with Dupont Underground to bring live comedy underneath Dupont Circle. Eight great local comedians square off in a one-night stand-up tournament, where the audience picks the winner. RUMBLE!

SPOTLIGHT

The world's greatest comedy competition is going underground! Comedy Kumite is a one-night stand-up tournament with eight great local comics. It's usually held every few months at the Improv, to packed audiences. But on May 1, we're teaming up with Dupont Underground to hold the kumite underneath Dupont Circle. The Underground is the nonprofit that operates in the old trolley tunnels below the circle. Enjoy a great show while checking out one of the coolest event and art spaces in the city. PLEASE NOTE: All ticketing is handled by Dupont Underground.

Martin Amini 

Martin Amini was born and raised in Silver Spring, MD. In the past 5 years Martin has performed at comedy clubs and colleges across the country. Martin has opened for touring headliners such as Trevor Noah, Jerrod Carmichael, and Jermaine Fowler. Martins stand up material touches on what it's like growing up mixed in America coming from an Iranian and Bolivian background. In the past year Martin has appeared in the Washington Post, Complex Magazine, and Revolt TV. See a clip on YouTube.

Dana Fleitman 

Dana Fleitman is a Washington, D.C. comedienne who brings laughter to the joyless masses of our nation’s capital through her imaginative over-analysis of everyday life. Clever, sarcastic and generally awesome, Dana will merrily pontificate on groundbreaking and original topics like her cat, dating and eating. Dana comes from an activist and social justice background and is excited to lend her voice to less important issues. She is also the regular host of Pun DMV competitions at the Improv.

Franqi French 

Franqi French has a way of perfectly balancing her brash wit with a refreshing point of view. In addition to her local performances, she has graced stages on the West Coast and opened for one of the original kings of comedy: DL Hughley. Franqi has made several TV appearances on the Roland Martin show on TV One.

Rob Maher 

Rob Maher is a two time finalist in Comedy Central's Laugh Riot competition, and in 2017 he was featured on “Hart of the City.”. He is a recurring guest on Baltimore's 98 Rock and is a regular performer at the DC Improv, the Richmond and Virginia Beach Funny Bones and Magooby's Joke House. Rob is also one of Armed Forces Entertainment's featured comedians. He's had the great honor of performing shows for our troops all over Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Japan and Egypt. Under the banner of Die Laughing Productions he produces murder mystery comedy shows.

Ross Benoit 

Ross Benoit is a Massachusetts native who moved to Northern Virginia at age 6. Eighteen years later, he started doing stand-up comedy. You can see him hosting shows and performing at venues all around the DMV.

Naomi Karavani 

Naomi Karavani is a comedian and currently an on-camera correspondent and writer for the weekly comedy news show "Redacted Tonight" in Washington, D.C. She featured in a number of comedy festivals such as the Women in Comedy, Cape Fear Comedy Fest, the Underground Comedy Fest, the 202 Comedy Festival, What a Joke Fest, Laugh Your Asheville Off, Rogue Island Comedy Festival, Limestone, and the District of Comedy Festival. Before joining the Redacted team she worked as a high school history teacher in Brooklyn, New York for over five years.

Umar Khan 

Umar Khan is a Baltimore comedian who has been performing regularly for the past 5 years. He’s become a regular at clubs, colleges, independent shows, and local theaters in the Baltimore and DC areas. He has performed at the Baltimore Comedy Factory, Magooby's Joke House, Creative Alliance Theater in Baltimore, and the DC Improv. Umar has had the opportunity open up for great comedians like Todd Barry and Hari Kondabolu.

Sean Savoy 

Sean Savoy is a global force for comedy. Hailing from Columbia, MD, Savoy has toured the planet from Sweden and Norway to Guam and Japan and all over the U.S. of A. with his partner in comedy, the legendary Pablo Francisco. Savoy’s high-impact, rapidfire hilarity belies his mellow mood and laidback attitude. Sean recently appeared on Gotham Comedy Live, in his television debut and electrified the crowd. Combining diverse characters with a wicked wit, Savoy can reach any audience with his timeless material, while meeting his expressed goal – to bring joy with his jokes and heal hearts with humor, all while bringing as much fun to his audiences as he’s having on stage.
