Beginning Improv Online

September 8 - September 22

Three weeks on Tuesday nights, with instructor Anna Bethel. Learn improv and have a great time!

Course Description

The fundamentals of improvised comedy strengthen communication, creativity, and connections. Even in a world of "social distancing" one can discover and nurture these traits within themselves. The innumerable skills gained through improvised comedy can aid in range from better communication with peers, up to and including conquering presentations and engaging in difficult conversations. Together the class and instructor Anna Bethel will create a supportive environment as they develop confidence and support their spontaneous thinking by playing games. This class will be conducted online via video conferencing. Participants must have a reliable Internet connection and a computer or device with a webcam and microphone. Focus 1: "Yes And ..." The foundation of improv as well as all great teams and creative thinking! After introductory games to have the group realize "we are all in this together," we will exercise agreement and addition. I will work with the group on games that focus on listening in order to agree, then support to add new elements.

Focus 2: Groupthink and Trust. Building off the support and team aspects of the "yes and," we then will move into games that support the "groupthink" aspect of improv. How do you react to the unexpected? How do you make sense and be accepting of the nonsensical?

Focus 3: First Choice, Best Choice. After fully exploring "yes and," groupthink, and utilizing the trust in the room, we explore the comfort in supporting yourself. After fear (specifically, the self-doubt and perception of being "wrong") has gone away, we will play games that encourage creativity to spring from even the most apprehensive team member.

  • Tuesdays, September 8 - September 22, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. (three sessions total)
  • Tuition: $100
  • All classes are 18 and over. Once payment is made, there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations.
