Pun DMV sampler

Every few months the Improv hosts a pun competition. We rolled tape on the May 2 edition, and a few of the contestants gave us the thumbs up to put their speeches online.

Check out these pun soliloquies from Dana Fleitman, Alex Snider, Gail Ballantyne, Rachel Gross, Libby Bowers and Aaron Schwartzbaum.

DCI Update: May 9

This Week At the Club

Tom Papa

We're dark until Thursday, but we're making up for it with action in both showrooms, three nights in a row. Thursday through Saturday, Tom Papa headlines the main room. Great comic, great show, and only $20 for admission. On Sunday night we have a graduation show for the latest stand-up class at our comedy school. Tickets are just $10 for that.

In the lounge, we are going to be packed for Trivia on Thursday, and the Friday "Hey Frase" podcast taping is already sold out. You can see short-form improv on Saturday, with either the 7:30 ComedySportz show or the 9:45 Late Night Improv show. Either of those shows are $15.

Adding Up

We have a bunch of sold-out shows in the next few weeks, and people who follow the Improv regularly know that sometimes we add shows. If you're planning ahead, here's the situation: We're not adding anything more for the Pump and Dump (May 16-17). We also already have eight sold out shows with Craig Robinson, and at this point there's really not room to add more. On Memorial Day weekend, we will be adding shows for Michael Blackson ... we're just in the process of figuring out when. More info soon.

Summer School!

Comedy School

When you're younger, summer school is a place of great shame, or of incredibly huge dorks trying to graduate a year early. As an adult, summer school is all about doing cool things you actually want to do. We now have five different spring/summer improv comedy classes open for registration, as well as a sketch writing workshop on the July calendar. Here's the rundown ...

BEGINNING IMPROV

LEVEL TWO IMPROV

SKETCH WRITING

  • July 14-16: Two day "SNL Sketch Writing Workshop" sessions with Ali Farahnakian of the Peoples Improv Theater.

DCI Update: May 1

This Week At the Club

Bruce Bruce

It's looking really busy this week. Tuesday night, the ASAP organization has a "graduation" show of veterans who completed their stand-up comedy class. (All ticketing is controlled by ASAP for this event.) The pun competition in our lounge that night is sold out. Wednesday night, we're also sold out for the DC Improv debut of Jake and Amir, who are taping an episode of "If I Were You."

Thursday through Sunday, Bruce Bruce is in the main showroom, and if our files are correct it's the first time he's been here since the 1990s. Right now it's six scheduled shows, but there might be one or two added. Watch our social media for updates. (Three of the original six are already sold out.)

New Shows

Big news! Comedy icon Judd Apatow is coming to the Improv for a week of stand-up this July. He's known as one of the most influential directors and producers of comedy, but he actually started out as a stand-up, and now he's bringing it full circle. And John Heffron is heading our way in July. Everything will be on sale by May 2.

What You Missed ...

The Improv has been around for 25 years, and we've had a lot of cool shows. But some of our most memorable moments are the surprises. In the middle of last week, reps from Hasan Minhaj contacted the club. He was going to headline the White House Correspondents Dinner on April 29 and wanted to run his set a few times the night before. We put together a $5 Friday showcase, with four performers announced and one TBD. So 120 comedy fans who paid only $5 were surprised with a sneak preview of one of DC's biggest annual comedy traditions. We took a few pictures of the show and put 'em on Facebook.

Some events really are last-minute, but whenever big things are happening, we try to tell our newsletter subscribers first. (Or at least drop strong hints, if we're trying to be secretive.) Sign up!
