DCI Update: June 6

Arise SpearsThis Week at the Club

We're keeping it simple this week: One headliner, no lounge shows. Aries Spears takes the stage Thursday through Sunday. A bunch of these shows are selling pretty well, so maybe plan ahead.

New Shows

Four big acts to tell you about. First off, we've got Damon Wayans Jr. making his DC Improv debut August 18-20. He's fantastic on TV, so we're looking forward to seeing what he can do on stage. In September, we're lucky to get a return visit from Sommore. She returned to the club in 2016 after a long hiatus, this time we only had to wait a year.

Jumping to October: International superstar Gad Elmaleh makes his DC Improv debut October 19-21. (Gad speaks four languages, but the show is in English.) He's gearing up for a Netflix special taping this fall, so these shows should be great. Then at the end of the month, the wellRED comedy guys are here for a full weekend. Tell all your liberal redneck friends.

Dupont Underground / Time Machine Roast

Tickets are selling very well for our June 27 event with Dupont Underground. The Time Machine Roast will be UNDER Dupont Circle that night ... so we have an unusual event in a unique space. Not bad for a Tuesday night. You can get the info at dcimprov.com; just be advised that the ticketing is handled by Dupont Underground, and the show is in their space.

Low Ticket Warning

Frank CaliendoSummer is here! We know it's going to be a very exciting summer, with both Jamie Foxx and Mario Lopez hosting game shows based on apps. But we still think live entertainment is better. If that's how you roll, come party with us ...  Here's an update on all shows that are trending toward sold out (or in some cases, the tickets are already gone). Lounge is 60 seats, main showroom is 285:

  • Frank Caliendo (June 2-4): Friday 7:30 and Saturday 7:30 are sold out. As we're typing this, there are 31 tickets left for Friday 9:45, 4 tickets left for Saturday 9:45, and 109 tickets left for Sunday 7. In other words, don't wait until the last minute.
  • Aries Spears (June 8-11): Saturday 7 has 80 tickets left, and Saturday 9:15 has 120 left. The Friday 9:15 is also half sold.
  • Nikki Glaser (June 16-18): Now just 95 tickets left for Saturday 7:30.
  • DeRay Davis (June 29-July 2): This is DeRay, AND it's a holiday weekend, so business is going to be brisk. Right now the Saturday 9 p.m. show is more than half full.
  • Judd Apatow (July 20-22): We're getting close to a sold out weekend. The Saturday 7:30 show is already gone. Thursday 7:30 has 37 tickets left. Saturday 9:45 has 45 tickets left. And each Friday show has around 65 tickets remaining.
  • Bert Kreischer (September 28-30): We're down to the last 47 seats for the Saturday 7:30 show. The Saturday 9:45 has around 120 seats left.

The following shows are all sold out ...

DCI Update: May 31

openmicThis Week (and Next Week) at the Club

We're a little worn out from last weekend, when Michael Blackson did 11 sold out shows. So we're off until Friday ... but we're coming back strong. Friday through Sunday, Frank Caliendo is in the main showroom, doing some of the best comedic impressions you'll ever see. In the lounge showroom, our Next Wave series is back with Marshall Brandon, who is recommended to you by Donnell Rawlings. (Marshall's shows are Friday and Saturday.)

New Shows

We've got a fun announcement on tap for next week, but for now the only new thing on the schedule is the June 15 open mic night. Free admission (but the two-item minimum is in place).

Dupont Underground / Time Machine Roast

Dupont Circle is just a few blocks north of the Improv on Connecticut Avenue, and back in the day streetcars used to run UNDER the circle. When the streetcars went away, the tunnels and platforms were boarded up, and for decades people have struggled to find a use for them ...

But now, Dupont Underground is turning those tunnels into one of DC's unique art spaces. They're putting on exhibitions, concerts and more. This summer, the DC Improv is going to help them add live comedy to the list. On June 27 (a Tuesday night), check out the Time Machine Roast, where historic figures verbally assault each other for fun. We did a roast in our lounge at the end of April and it was a ton of fun (and sold out, at that). You can get the info at dcimprov.com; just be advised that the ticketing is handled by Dupont Underground, and the show is in their space.

Comedy Kumite X: Shahryar

Shahryar

The world's greatest comedy tournament is back on June 17 for the Xth time ... It's a one night stand-up battle, featuring top-notch local comedians. Get to know your gladiators!

Name: Shahryar

Nickname: None

Greatest Victory Outside of Comedy: I returned a Bowflex I never used to Costco after like 7 years and got all my money back.

Best Simile for the Effect of My Jokes: My jokes are like immigrants. Pretty much all of them are good and quite a few are fantastic. Ok, yeah, one or two are may be bad here and there, but it doesn't justify the creation of a call center for -- ah, you get my point.

Catch Phrase I Say When Standing Over Fallen Opponents: Spell better!

The One Thing That Makes Me Cry: When the Terminator figures out why John Connor cries

Spoiler Alert: I don't have an accent, I was born here, but my voice is just weird

DCI Update: May 16

openmicThis Week (and Next Week) at the Club

You're too late. The Pump and Dump shows on Tuesday and Wednesday are sold out. The Craig Robinson shows Thursday through Sunday are sold out. And we don't have anything going in the lounge showroom this weekend. If you want to plan ahead to next week ... we've got open mic night on May 24. Then we have Michael Blackson Thursday through Sunday ... but eight of the 10 scheduled shows are already sold out.

New Shows

We put the June editions of ComedySportz improv (June 24) and Happy Hour Trivia (June 15) into the system.

Looking ahead to September, we're going to have another DC Improv debut when the Lady Lovin' podcast takes the stage. They'll be here on September 26, a Tuesday night.

Finally, a few more added shows for you. We have 11 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday for Michael Blackson next week (those are the two non-sold-out shows mentioned above). And we added a Sunday 8:30 show for Jo Koy on August 13, as all the other scheduled shows with Jo are sold out.

New Class

We've got another addition to the summer school lineup. Anna Bethel will be teaching her Level 3 Short-Form Improv class. It's a five week run on Tuesday nights, and the first class is July 11.
