DCI Update: December 28

This Week at the Club ...

Want to end 2016 on a high note? We've got an open mic on Wednesday (tonight) that is free admission. Two-item minimum once you're in the showroom, but no cost to get in.

Tom Rhodes then takes over the main showroom for the rest of the year! He'll do some shows Thursday and Friday before starring in our New Year's Eve extravaganza. Both the NYE seatings are filling up, so if you want to party with us (and trust me, you do) maybe buy in advance.

Back to School

It's last call for Beginning Improv, as we we have one spot left in the class starting January 7. The other two Beginning Improv sections are already sold out.

If you already have some improv comedy experience and want to get a little more, we do have some "level two" courses in January, as well as one-day workshops with Stephanie Anderson.

DCI Update: December 20

This Week at the Club ...

We're going local! Tony Woods, who started his comedy career in DC, headlines the main showroom on Thursday and Friday. The Friday shows will be taped for his new special. Every show with Tony is  at least two-thirds full already, as a heads up.

In the lounge on Friday, we're celebrating Festivus with Ryan Conner. He used to work in the club's office, before going on to fame and fortune as a stand-up comedian. (He was a top 10 finisher on the most recent "Last Comic Standing.") The early seating is sold out, but we did add a 9:45 show.

The other show on our calendar, the Merry Murder Mystery on Wednesday, is already sold out.

New Year's plans

If you need to make some New Year's Plans, you can still get in on the action here at the club. Tom Rhodes headlines, plus everyone in attendance gets a souvenir t-shirt for the club's 25th anniversary AND a pass to a future show.

Beginning Improv

We're now down to ONE available section for January 2017 ... the Saturday edition that starts on 1/7. If you're looking for a New Year's Resolution that you might actually enjoy keeping, this is a good way to go ...

Headliner of State: Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter punched his ticket to Washington by running as an outsider. Could he make people laugh in the ultimate insider town?

Our excellent expert is James Fallows, who worked as Carter's lead speechwriter for two years. (These days, he's an astounding journalist working at The Atlantic.) We talk about Carter's voice, his appeal in the post-Watergate era, and whether he adapted to the rapidly changing "rules" of the modern media era.

Also, there's a story about an exploding gas station. What's not to love?

DCI Update: December 16

Schedule changes! YAAAAAY!

In a perfect world, the comedians who perform at the DC Improv would only perform at the DC Improv. Also, they'd all live in a group house, maybe somewhere in Adams Morgan, and they'd have zany adventures all around town. Unfortunately, many of the comedians who perform here are extremely talented and sometimes have jobs in other cities that require them to cancel or move their shows at the DC Improv. It happens.

Last week, we were very pumped that Mike Birbiglia sold out two shows in about 18 hours. And then two days later, we found out he has to move those shows. The February 12 shows have been moved to February 8. We already sent messages to everyone who purchased tickets, so if you're just finding out about this for the first time, check your spam filter for your options.

Schedule changes always come in bunches, so this week we also found out that Bryan Callen had to cancel his January 2017 shows so he could tape some TV shows. (All ticket purchasers have been e-mailed.) That's a bummer, but it does open the door for ...

Mike Vecchione

Next Wave: Mike Vecchione

We are now kicking off our "Next Wave" series in the main showroom on January 13 and 14. We ask amazing comedians about the rising stars that they love to watch. Their recommendations then headline an Improv showroom as part of our 25th anniversary celebration.

Dave Attell is an all-time great club comic, and he recommended Mike Vecchione to us (and to you). Mike has been on "Conan," "The Tonight Show" and a bunch of programs on Comedy Central. Should be a really good time. Tickets are just $17, so it's a very affordable way to get on the Mike Vecchione band wagon.

January Beginning Improv classes

The start of a new year usually means people trying new things. An improv comedy class ain't a bad option. We had three sections of Beginning Improv scheduled, but one of them just sold out. You can still get into the classes that start on January 7 or on January 11. (But there are only two slots left in the 1/11 class.)

This Week at the Club ...

Happy Hour Trivia is in our lounge on Thursday ... free admission (with a two-item minimum). Doors at 6:30, game starts around 7:05.

The main showroom is once again home to Hypnotist Flip Orley, from Thursday through Sunday. He has the record for shows headlined at the DC Improv. For good reason.

Adele Givens

New for 2017

Got another big name for you in 2017. We haven't had Adele Givens here for a while, but she'll be on our stage Easter weekend. Should be awesome to have her back. Between Adele, Sheryl Underwood and Sommore, we've had most of the Queens of Comedy in the last calendar year.

XM on X-mas

If you love comedy, hate holiday music and have satellite radio, listen up. The Improv comedy clubs are partnering with the SiriusXM comedy channels in a big way over the next year. On Christmas Day, the Improvs are taking over the classic comedy channel with some deep cuts from famous headliners. Here's the promo.
