Third time's a charm?

mikebirbigliaAt the end of 2016, we announced two shows with Mike Birbiglia on February 12. They sold out almost immediately. Then, a few days later, Mike had to move the shows to February 8. Unfortunately (for us), Mike is very popular and successful. On January 31, we were informed that Mike has a new obligation to one of his TV projects on February 8. The shows have to be moved AGAIN.

Mike will now be performing at the Improv on March 14, a Tuesday. The showtimes are the same -- 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. If you currently have tickets, they have been transferred automatically to the corresponding showtime on March 14. Please know that the we hate to inconvenience our customers, and we always try to work with managers and agents to keep scheduled shows in place. But this is a situation where it's out of our hands, and we'd rather reschedule the shows a second time than cancel them. If you have tickets already, we'd like to confirm you can make the new date in March. In addition, if you have any concerns or are unable to attend on March 14, let us know ASAP so we can assist you. (You have the option of a refund, or we can transfer you into a different show on our calendar.) Please contact the box office at 202-296-7008 and dial 0 regarding your tickets. Spirited Discussions

The Improv is a comedy club, but we love variety as much as the next guy. On March 15, we're getting our fourth visit from medium Cindy Kaza. If you're curious what her show might be like -- or what exactly a medium does -- we've already had a few interviews with Cindy on our podcast from her earlier visits. The first one is a "get to know you" chat, the second one is about her views of the spirit world, and the third is about how mediums continue their on-the-job training. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, it makes for some interesting listening. Check 'em out!

DCI Update: January 30

This Week at the Club ...

Gilbert Gottfried

We've got us a bona fide comedy legend this week, as Gilbert Gottfried headlines Thursday through Saturday. (Like all good Americans, we're watching the Super Bowl on Sunday.) The Saturday early show is already sold out.

In the lounge showroom, the Next Wave series continues with Jordan Rock -- recommended to you by his brother, Tony Rock. Two shows Friday, two shows Saturday.

We also have our pun competition in the lounge on Thursday, but that's been sold out for weeks. Buy early next time.

Dying Laughing on February 15

There's a new documentary about stand-up comedy on the way, featuring a bunch of prominent comedians talking about what it took to get them to to the top of the heap. (By prominent, we mean Jerry Seinfeld, Garry Shandling, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer etc.) You can see "Dying Laughing" for FREE at the DC Improv on February 15, a Wednesday night. It works like our open mic night: You can roll the dice and try to walk up the day of the event, and if we have seats available you can get in. Or you can guarantee yourself a seat by making an online reservation. There's a $1.50 service fee per seat if you go that route.

Staying Classy

We have three late-winter sessions of Beginning Improv at our comedy school, and one of them just sold out. You can still register for the classes starting February 27 or March 4.

Latino takeover: March 29-April 5

rickgutierrezIn all their infinite wisdom, the scheduling gods have handed us a nice theme week, coming up in the spring. In an eight-day span, we will have eight shows headlined by Latino comedians. Check it out:

  • March 29: Rick Gutierrez. This is part of our Next Wave series, where we ask big-time headliners to recommend comics that people in Washington need to see. Gabriel Iglesias recommended Rick, who hails from San Antonio and frequently tours with Gabriel. Tickets for this show are $15.
  • March 30-April 2: Pablo Francisco. The Chilean-American comic has been a mainstay at the DC Improv for years. He's famous for his high-energy routines, punctuated with top-shelf voices and sound effects. Tickets for these shows are $30.
  • April 5: Martin Moreno and Alfred Robles. Another Next Wave show -- also recommended by Gabriel Iglesias. Martin and Alfred are featured on the TV show "Fluffy Breaks Even," and they also tour with Gabriel. Tickets for this show are $17.

DCI Update: January 25

This Week at the Club ...

brentmorinBrent Morin is back, headlining the club for a second time (and once again he's got Jason Collings along as his feature act). The host is Martin Amini. They're in the main showroom Thursday through Sunday.

In ye olde lounge showroom, there's a full day of short-form improv on Saturday. We have a ComedySportz for Kids show at 2:30 p.m., a regular all-ages ComedySportz show at 7:30, then Late Night Improv at 9:45.

New on the Schedule

We added a bunch of stuff, so we're turning now to the greatest form of communication known to man. THE BULLETED LIST!

Wednesday, 25 January 2017 10:14

Headliner of State: Zachary Taylor

Was Zachary Taylor the funniest president ever? If any experts out there know, they ain't talking.

So on a very special episode, we're going straight to Zachary Taylor himself. Get ready for seven minutes of stand-up comedy from the 12th president. Old Rough and Ready is back from the dead and on the mic. Will you Whig out?

DCI Update: January 18

This Week at the Club ...

huggylowdownIt's a weird week in DC, so we're giving you a little stability ... Huggy Lowdown and Chris Paul, two radio superstars and longtime DC Improv favorites, are headlining Thursday through Sunday.

Jeff Maurer headlines our lounge on Saturday as part of the Next Wave comedy series, but it's pretty much sold out. Just two tickets left for the 7:30 show as of this posting. We've also got our monthly trivia night on Thursday in the lounge.

There could be only two ...

On January 14 we once again hosted the world's greatest stand-up battle, Comedy Kumite. Eight local comics showed up and competed in a brackted tournament at 7:30. Then we switched up some of the first-round matchups and did a second tournament at 9:45. The big winners were Pat Riley on the early show and Ross Benoit on the late show. Congrats to the guys ... and you can see pictures of all the competitors on our Facebook page.

Schedule Change

Minor tweak to our Next Wave schedule. Sean Patton, originally set to headline the lounge February 24-25, has been pushed back two weeks. He now headlines March 10-11.

Around the Web

Do you want to see Gilbert Gottfried on Stephen Colbert's show? Of course you do. You also want to see him here at the club February 2-4.
